Why Hospitality Venues are Choosing Retractable Roofing

Everybody loves an alfresco experience, and the hospitality industry knows their customers want to enjoy a meal closer to nature or sip a cold beer in the fresh air on a hot day. But we all know how harsh the climate can be, and how unpredictable! Having a retractable roof allows hospitality venues to be instantly adaptable to sudden downpours so they can maximise year-round seating capacity and protect their customers from harsh sun, strong winds and unexpected rains.

Providing outside areas for patrons enhances their experience and being able to maintain that al-fresco atmosphere regardless of the season makes very good business sense. Whatever the weather, customers will still be able to use the outside space, increasing customer satisfaction. For venue owners, installing custom commercial outdoor structures ensures that outdoor dining remains profitable and operational throughout all four seasons.

No longer will that wedding day be ruined by rain, or spectators at a sports venue frazzle in the scorching sun and have to go home early, coffee arrangements can be kept and dining experiences guaranteed. And anytime is a good time for a drink in the beer garden, whatever the weather!

How do Retractable Roofs Work?

Retractable roof systems are often installed over courtyards and rooftop bars, in order not to lose custom during bad weather (and that can mean hot, cold or wet). They are usually made of waterproof PVC fabrics or automated louvres that can be opened or closed at the touch of a button. Some systems even have integrated wind and rain sensors.

The framework (usually aluminium or steel) has high-torque motors connected to it that pull the fabric taut when opened or concertina it back when closed. Some advanced models have automated sensors that detect wind or rain automatically closing the roof or even retracting it if winds are high and damage is a risk. Others are operated via a remote control or wall switch, allowing staff to effortlessly operate the roof.

These systems are built with integrated gutters and drainage that are often found within the supporting posts, ensuring that the rain is diverted away from the area, and any people or furniture remains completely dry.

Fabric or Louvred?

Both types of retractable roof provide year-round all-weather protection for hospitality venues, but they differ greatly in cost, durability, light control and aesthetics, so all these factors need to be taken into consideration when choosing the best option for a business. If you are debating between these options, explore our comparison on retractable roofs vs. louvre roofs to find out which is better for your space.

  • Fabric Roofs: Offer a soft-aesthetic and a cosy vibe and come with various colour or pattern options. They are fully retractable, rolling back into compact cassettes, and opening completely to reveal the sky. When closed, natural light can still filter through, creating a soft ambience. High-quality waterproof canvas offers excellent protection against heavy downpours and comes at an affordable upfront cost. However, fabric roofs may require more regular cleaning than louvre roofs and have a shorter lifespan.
  • Louvre Roofs: Offer a modern, sleek and bioclimatic look with rigid slats that tilt open to control sunlight and airflow, or close completely to form a solid, watertight roof. When fully closed louvre roofs block out nearly all the sunlight, making the space below darker. They offer superior protection against intense sun and can be adjusted for ventilation, but the drainage may become overwhelmed with torrential downpours. They are more durable and require less maintenance, but come at a higher price. Read our full guide on louvre roof maintenance to learn how to keep systems operating smoothly over time.

Both systems can be enhanced with heating and lighting, the difference lies with the experience the venue wishes to give its guests. Fabric roofs provide a soft, cosy feeling and fully open-air experience, while louvered roofs give a permanent, high-end look with precise control over shading and airflow.
