Why are Retractable Roof Systems in Australia so Popular?

Australians are known for their love of the outdoors, but we are also known for having some severe weather systems and some very harsh UV rays. In Melbourne our unpredictable climate means there is a great possibility of experiencing all four seasons in one day, making outdoor living a difficult concept at times, especially if you only have a small, outdoor living area or balcony to use.

Retractable roof systems offer the perfect solution for outdoor spaces, not only because they are engineered to withstand the strong sun, wind and rain, but because you can adjust them to suit your needs and the changeable weather, and get the most out of your outdoor area, whatever the weather!

Who doesn't want a beautiful and functional extension of their home? At Outdoor InDesign we are here to help you turn that vision into a reality. By investing in a retractable outdoor roof, you are not only enhancing your lifestyle with a stylish alfresco area to dine or entertain, but you are turning your patio, deck or balcony into a usable space year-round.

An Outdoor Living Space Designed Especially for you

At Outdoor InDesign we specialise in customising outdoor living spaces specifically to suit each individual customer's needs and requirements. Even if you only have a small area to use, we can tailor-make an attractive retractable sunroof for a patio that will provide you with shade from the sun, and protection from the rain.

We only use high-quality materials made from aluminium that are built to withstand the harsh weather conditions without rusting or rotting away. The framework is made to last and requires very little maintenance, giving you an easy and comfortable extension to your home, whatever the weather.

Our retractable roof system is tailored to meet the specific needs of apartment dwellers. Unlike traditional roofing solutions, the Gibraltar roof system is designed to overcome the restrictions often placed on balconies, such as limitations on permanent structures. With custom aluminum framework and a sleek, retractable design, this system ensures you remain compliant with council and fire safety regulations.

Melbourne’s weather can be unpredictable, but that shouldn’t limit the use of your balcony. The Gibraltar retractable roof is completely waterproof and can handle wind speeds up to 137 km/h. This means your balcony remains usable in all conditions, providing you with an all-weather outdoor living space.

Unlock Your Home’s Full Potential

For many homeowners, an unused yard represents significant untapped potential.

When thoughtfully designed and properly delivered, an outdoor transformation becomes more than an extension — it becomes a capital improvement that enhances how your home functions while strengthening its long-term value.

But delivering that transformation requires more than construction. Outdoor projects involve dozens of moving parts — design, engineering, approvals, materials and scheduling. Without careful coordination, projects can quickly run into delays, budget changes and compromises in the final result.

That’s why we developed our Precision+ Design Service.
